Mike Berry, a name synonymous with British music and television, has passed away at the age of 82. Born Michael Hubert Bourne on September 24, 1942, in Northampton, Berry began his musical journey in the 1960s, capturing hearts with hits like A Tribute to Buddy Holly and Don’t You Think It’s Time. With his distinct voice and style, he was affectionately dubbed 'the British Buddy Holly'. Early in his career, he shared stages with the likes of The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, embedding himself in the annals of British rock history.
Fast forward to 2025, and Berry was still enchanting audiences. His final sold-out performance at London's Half Moon in Putney exemplified his perennial charm and musical prowess. Backed by The Outlaws, Berry’s swansong performance was a memorable highlight in his 64-year career.

While Berry's music career flourished, he seamlessly transitioned into acting, showcasing versatility and comedic timing. Perhaps most well-known for his role as Mr. Spooner in the BBC sitcom Are You Being Served? from 1981 to 1985, he endeared himself to television audiences with his humor and wit. He also captured younger hearts with his characters in Worzel Gummidge, first running from 1979 to 1981 and then reprising it in 2019.
Even beyond these popular roles, Berry remained engaged with his craft, including auditioning for The Voice UK in 2016. His rendition of Buddy Holly’s True Love Ways was a nod to his musical roots and love for the legendary rock 'n' roll artist.

Survived by his wife Susan and their children, Berry leaves behind a rich cultural legacy. His brother, the activist and drag performer Bette Bourne (Peter Bourne), who passed away in 2024, left a lasting impact in a different sphere, echoing the family's tradition of influence and innovation.
